the proposal
It was April 18th, 2003, and Sara was eager to see what Ryan had planned for the day. It was cold for April, even in Minnesota. Ryan took Sara to Minnehaha Falls for a surprise picnic. They shivered as they ate their sandwiches and fruit. Ryan handed Sara a rose and pulled out his guitar. He asked her if he could play her a song he'd written. Knowing him well, she asked, "is it a worship song?" He replied, "sort of." He then began to sing her a beautiful song about love, life, and forever. A fleeting thought flashed in Sara's mind that this seemed like a wedding song, but she thought nothing more of it and continued to soak in Ryan's words.
When he was done, a half-frozen tear fell from Sara's eye. She reached a hand out to him, hoping for a hug, but he turned away to put his guitar in its case. While Sara sat cross-legged on a thin blanket, Ryan remained kneeling and pulled out the ring from the guitar case and held it out to her.
"Sara Marie Govier, will you marry me?"
Sara was shocked, half overjoyed at the moment she'd been waiting for, and half deeply frustrated at the hunch that she was probably dreaming again. When she realized that she was indeed awake, she threw her arms around Ryan's neck and cried.
"Is that a yes?"
"Oh! yes."
"Do you want to put on the ring?"
"Oh! yes, I do."
